Received 6/2006: I am writing to
introduce or reintroduce two free, online educational resources—an
alcohol
curriculum and newsletter—developed at Boston University with federal
grant support:
Helping Patients Who Drink Too Much
http://www.mdalcoholtraining.org,
new and improved curriculum for physician educators to train primary
care clinicians in screening and brief
intervention for unhealthy alcohol use, using a patient-centered,
evidence-based approach that emphasizes
cross-cultural efficacy.
Alcohol and Health: Current Evidence
http://www.alcoholandhealth.org
newsletter summarizing the latest clinically relevant research on
alcohol and health, including related
Journal Club and Grand Rounds slide presentations.
I hope you find these resources useful for your teaching and clinical
care.
Sincerely,
Richard Saitz, MD, MPH, FASAM, FACP, Professor of Medicine and
Epidemiology
Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health
The curriculum and newsletter are projects of the Boston Medical Center,
supported by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and
produced in cooperation with the Boston University Schools of Medicine
and
Public Health.

From Jeff B.: The following website has been brought to my attention:
http://recoverymaintenance.ipnfl.org/index.htm It is a site where a
workbook on recovery
maintenance in nurses can be purchased. Might be worth a visit to that
site to look it over.

SAMHSA’s Office of Applied Studies treatment planning area definitions
provided by each State, includes a
mental health measure and more substance use measures than in the first
SubState report as well as
tables with the highest and lowest prevalence region within each State for
Past Year Cocaine Use, Past
Month Marijuana Use, and Past Month Alcohol Use.
All the tables in the variable list can be used to provide not only
prevalence rates but also to examine how
much uniformity or difference there is among the State treatment planning
areas within a State on the
various substance use and mental health measures. The table in the appendix
focuses on the usage rates
of alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine; the table also identifies the planning
areas at the extremes.
In general, the data can help pinpoint State treatment planning areas for
prevention and
treatment programs. The full report is at:
http://oas.samhsa.gov/substate2k6/toc.cfm
In addition, OAS has released a short report on alcohol dependence by State
treatment planning areas at:
