This non-profit 501(c)(3) (Tax Exempt) organization has a 15 member (volunteer) board including 3 officers (President, Vice-President, and Treasurer).  In August 2009, a renewal contract was signed with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA), for another two-year grant to monitor impaired pharmacists. The grant monies are from dedicated funds for impaired pharmacists that are a portion of the pharmacist's license renewal fees collected biannually in Indiana.  The primary purpose of this organization is to help chemically dependent pharmacists and student pharmacists.  Marketing to the community is very important – “to get the word out that we are here to help.”  We have developed a PowerPoint presentation that is presented throughout the state to promote our recovery program.  Our two state colleges of pharmacy also promote the PRN by displaying our brochure on their intranet for confidential viewing by individuals as well as allowing the PRN to present recovery sessions to students. During the state association annual convention in September each year, the PRN is given a complimentary booth to promote the recovery program. PRN Volunteers are reimbursed for travel to and from client meetings and for phone expenses incurred while monitoring. Clients are self/employer referred or board referred.   We subcontract services of a certified Medical Review Officer for monitoring the health and recovery status of each client, and we refer our clients to a specific consultant lab for urine drug screen services.   PRNIndiana carries general liability insurance.

PRNIndiana hosts an orientation, every 2-3 years for state board members, attorney general, etc. to discuss what PRNIndiana is and what tools we have to help impaired pharmacists.  Representatives from PRNIndiana attend the state board meeting each month, advocating for clients and preparing for new board referred pharmacists and student pharmacists.  Annually, we sponsor 1-2 PRN board member/s or staff to attend the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependencies in June. Mr. Erdmann had attended University of Utah for 5 years, and Ms. Dunham has attended for 6 years.

What about funding? The organization does not charge any fees at this time to impaired pharmacists who sign a PRNIndiana contract.  We have a grant from the state of Indiana to cover fees of impaired pharmacists who live and work in Indiana under contract.  PRNIndiana does charge a $25 monthly fee for all student pharmacists signing a contract since the grant covers pharmacists only.  The PRNIndiana grant/fees do not include any treatment, MRO assessments, or urine drug screens fees.  Other sources of funding: Grants, sponsorships, donations.

Active clients include: Pharmacists and Student Pharmacists.  As of January 2004, Pharmacy Technicians must be certified by the Indiana State Board of Pharmacy.  PRNIndiana does not monitor pharmacy technicians at this time.  We do suggest to the state board, a treatment center for technicians that has a graduated fee scale based on individual’s finances.
